Haydn: Symphony No. 83, The Hen
Nielsen: Clarinet Concerto
Nielsen: Symphony No. 3, Sinfonia espansiva

Nielsen’s 3rd Symphony, subtitled his ‘Sinfonia espansiva’, grows from an opening motif that Nielsen is said to have thought of while riding a streetcar where not having any paper to hand, he jotted down the idea on his sleeve. Alongside, Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto with Philharmonia Principal Clarinet Mark van de Wiel, presents a musical battle of wills between the clarinet and snare drum. Run through with flashes of humour, no matter what mood the clarinet adopts, the snare drum is always there, ready with its devious rebuttal.
